Six weeks ago, 5 members started our first bootcamp of 2016. The course has been running since 2012, and was set up to get staff more involved with members and also to show what they have to offer. This was the first year that I have been involved and I was looking forward to getting stuck in and achieving some amazing results.
In December, Oliver Huntington and I planned out the course with the objective of giving each member a diet plan, a realistic one that they would be able to stick to. This part of the course is crucial as diet is 80-85% of how you achieve the results.
I was responsible for the cardio side of the course while Oliver looked after the strength training. The new year arrived and we had 5 enthusiastic members raring to go; 4 women and one young man. They embarked on a 6 week journey that they each agreed, changed their entire attitudes towards food and exercise.
On Tuesday morning the 12th of January at 6:30am we began the first of 12 training sessions (2 per week). Firstly, we carried out some fitness tests on each member. Each person that took part in the Bootcamp had their own personal goal. Some of the members that joined the course had been going to the gym for a couple of years, however, they didn’t feel they were achieving enough or perhaps reaching their full potential, and needed some direction with their training.
On day 2 Oliver took each persons’ body stats consisting of weight, waist, hip, thigh measurements and fat percentages. As well as the 2 sessions per week training with us, each person was expected to train 2-4 times a week on top of that. So training programmes were given out to follow.
Our aim with each Bootcamp is to help each person achieve their personal goals but also to improve their confidence in themselves and their own abilities, and to teach them how to reach their maximum potential. We believe a big part of achieving is believing that you can do it.
One of the most important factors for me in getting results is putting the effort in. Although at times, it was difficult, we wanted each person to see results, which meant; working hard! There is a misconception that the more time you spend in the gym, the bigger the chance of getting the desired results. But it’s about how HARD you work, not how long you work for. Workouts should be 40-60 mins max, getting the most out of your time, burning 600+ calories. Recovery and rest is crucial for your body to recover sufficiently for the next session. It’s simple, if you’re eating clean and training, but you’re still not getting the results you want, then you’re not pushing yourself hard enough. We wanted each person to learn how to do exercises the right way to get the most out of every workout. As mentioned before, some of the members were regular gym goers but needed a change of direction or some new motivation, so we demonstrated different methods of training, from Tabata to HIIT cardio workouts, and many more. Although some of the members were already friends, those friendships grew stronger and new friendships developed over the six weeks, as they sweated, swore and screamed their way through, supporting each other every step of the way!
The biggest problem for most people is FOOD.
Oliver came up with a great idea to start a Whats app group so that members could communicate with each other and also ask us questions about anything regarding diet or exercise. It turned out to be a great idea as a support network and was a brilliant addition to the course. There is a perception that healthy food is boring, so we felt it was important to encourage everyone and share healthy recipes. There were a few firsts too; making pancakes…..(badly) on a treat day…(naming no names). The main lesson learnt by everyone: you can not out train a bad diet.
The diet given showed what to eat every day with a cheat meal every 9 days where they could eat what they wanted. The plan was set out to give them the right amount of carbs, protein and good fats. Portion size was something that we looked at and it played a key part in getting the results they wanted. Keeping hydrated during the day drinking 2-3 litres of water is also essential.
“I joined the bootcamp to kick start my diet (weight loss) and fitness levels for the new year. It was very hard and a bit painful (as expected) but a great experience. Barry and Olly pushed me every week and helped me through each week with my aches and pains. I enjoyed being a part of a small team and would recommend it to anyone.”-Wendy Lumb.
The 6 weeks went pretty quickly, pushing each member harder each week, tears were shed, muscles were bruised but they stuck to their workouts week by week.
I have never seen a more dedicated group of people working towards one goal to achieve the results they want. The commitment and dedication by everyone was amazing and inspiring to see.
At the end of week 6 we did their fitness tests, increasing the levels on all three pieces of equipment in order to compare the results to the ones recorded in the beginning.
The results were amazing, 6 weeks in the fitness world is a very short time and that makes the results even more remarkable.
As a whole, the group lost almost 4 stones (25KG) and 37.5 inches in total, in just 6 weeks!
I had a problem with my diet for a while. I did not eat a lot but I ate the wrong foods. I was slightly nervous about following a strict diet plan but when I got it I found it was so easy to follow and it was not about starving yourself so I never felt hungry. That along with the extra exercise has raised my energy levels, and I feel really good. Even though it was tough I really enjoyed it and would do it again. -Vanessa Mallalieu
I knew bootcamp was going to be tough and i wasn’t wrong!! It was a real challenge not only taking part in the sessions but also putting in the extra work at the gym that was required. I’ve been at the gym more than i’ve been at home these last 6 weeks. I really enjoyed all the different exercises and it definitely gave me a buzz when I got through each session- even though at times I barely had energy to get back into the changing rooms! I was part of a really great group and Barry and Oliver were great support and offered fabulous advice. Basically we pestered them for the whole 6 weeks day and night!! (Whats App is great!)
I would definitely do it again. It’s given me the focus to push on and achieve my fitness goals. – Tracey Lenihan
I would highly recommend this course to our members. You will not only achieve the results you want in a short space of time, but it will also give you the tools to keep on getting leaner, stronger and fitter to lead a healthy lifestyle. I feel privileged and very proud to have been a part of something that has changed their attitudes to fitness and achieved such brilliant results. I would like to thank Oliver for all the hard work he put in to make the Bootcamp an enjoyable experience for everyone, and also to the ‘Bootcampers’ themselves for their amazing effort, and enthusiasm and for never giving up.
We are looking forward to seeing what the next Bootcamp group will achieve in April.
