Why isn’t your workout “working out”?
You feel like you spend your life in the gym. You’ve stuck to the same training regime religiously and you are just not getting the results that you want. Or….at least you aren’t getting the results you think you deserve.
There are many factors at work when it comes to getting your health, fitness and body shape results.
But are you considering them ALL? Here are my suggestions…..
1. Are you REALLY working hard enough? Honestly? Truthfully doing enough?
Nobody said it was easy! It isn’t hard to convince yourself that you are doing enough. Remember, as you work out more and more, your body will adapt. This means that you need to increase the intensity, the weight or the duration of your training. You need to push yourself.
“Leave your comfort zone!”
By doing the same programme you were first given when you joined the gym, or following the same training plan you started 2 months ago, you are just not making any progress! Ask for a new programme, speak to a Personal Trainer…it’s time to WORK HARD!
2. You are only doing cardio?
Whilst there are many benefits to cardio that we all know about, any training plan designed for the best results MUST include strength/resistance training. See my blog on lifting! There are so many benefits of weight and body weight exercise, including decreased body fat, increased muscle mass, strength, confidence and health to name a few. Remember, you can still get a cardio workout from doing your strength training!
3. You haven’t changed your diet?
“You can’t out train a bad diet!”
Exercise is essential, but you can train every day of the week and it will make very little difference if it isn’t supported by a good diet. Eat clean and healthy, it’s simple. Eat REAL foods and eliminate sugar and processed rubbish. Ask yourself, how much water you are drinking every day? See the PF blog on hydration!
4. Are you rewarding yourself with food?
Come on be honest, hands up if this is you – “I can have a pizza tonight, I trained today”, “Phew I earned that beer!” “Sure I’m interested in dessert, I went to the gym earlier”. Bad news, it doesn’t work like that!
You are undoing all of your hard work. Never reward yourself with food, it makes no sense. It will hinder your results and is completely the wrong mind set.
5. You’re just too impatient!
Unfortunately results don’t happen overnight. It takes time and consistency to reach a goal. How often have you decided that you are going to get in shape; you’re going to smash the gym, crack that diet and tell everyone who will listen to prepare themselves for the “new you”? 1-2 weeks later you find yourself tired, sore and desperately disappointed standing on the weighing scale. You decide ‘it doesn’t work’, get disheartened and give up!
My advice would be to set short term, medium term and long term goals and stick to them. Make them achievable. And don’t just focus on aesthetically driven results (looking “super skinny” and “ super hench”), think about how you feel – do you have more energy, or are you faster, stronger, are you functionally fitter?
You have to realise that this is a long term process that you MUST enjoy and be consistent with!
So….are you falling into any of the mistakes above? Give me a shout or ask a member of the PF team for some guidance to help you get right back on track!
